Will Levelling Up Fall Short?

The Northern Powerhouse Partnership (NPP) believes that post Brexit, people in the north of England are at risk of losing out on £300M a year for regional economic development.

The NPP, PACE at Teesside University, and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation have produced a report which indicates that regional economic development funding for England will be worth just over £1.4BN a year. This compares with an annual spend of £2.1BN under EDRF, ESF and the Local Growth Fund.

The government has evidently already guaranteed to match funding for Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Cornwall.

If these figures are accurate, we believe that this could result in cuts worth over £100M per annum for Yorkshire. Surely, this is not what levelling up is all about.
