York Central Development Offers Huge Opportunity

Plans for a multi-million pound development on land behind York station were approved by York City Council on Monday.

The plans for the 110 acre site will provide 2,500 new homes, around 900,000 square feet of office space and could eventually create 6,500 new jobs. This could potentially result in a 20% expansion of the city’s economy.

York City Council is supporting the project because; as well as providing new homes, 20% of which will be classed as affordable; it could attract highly paid jobs to the city from industries such as the technology sector and professional services. This could go some way to reducing the city’s reliance on relatively low-paying tourism jobs.

The application will now be put before the government for consideration before a detailed planning application, showing designs for the homes and offices, is submitted to the council.

If the planning process is completed successfully, then the project could take up to 20 years to complete.

Transforming Yorkshire believes that the project presents a significant opportunity to enhance and diversify the economy of the city but 20 years is an awful long time.
